On the 23th June 2011, in the villages of the Saas valley, you can see the Corpus Christi processions. Following high mass in the parish church, the procession sets out from the church and proceeds around the village.
|
| The Saas valley has a long and turbulent history. Celts, Romans and Saracens have all lived in the Saas valley. Living conditions in this rugged countryside were always difficult. Religion, however, helped people to survive. Many customs and traditions have remained to this day.
The Corpus Christi processions (on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday) in the villages of the Saas valley rank among the most beautiful of their kind in the valleys of the Canton of Valais. Following high mass in the parish church, the procession sets out from the church and proceeds around the village to the hamlets, back to the church square and finishes with a visit to the cemetery. |

| The centrepiece of the procession represents "Heaven" and is carried by four councillors. Beneath it, the priest holds in his hands the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament, the communicants in their white robes, the young girls with their garlands, the flag-bearers, the music societies, the choir, the women in local costumes, the rosary flags, the youth groups, the soldiers and the people praying.
The procession stops four times at the Corpus Christi altars, specially decked out for the occasion, and the priest with the gleaming gold monstrance pronounces the benediction. This tradition goes back to the middle ages. On this day the whole village is decked out with flags, the hotels, restaurants, barns, the streets and the alleyways. |
